Joseph Coates

Joseph Coates works hard, and it pays off. The job is often tedious and frustrating – Why is The Despondents so long? Why does Enter the Forest end halfway through, but then there’s a whole second act? – but he sticks with it.

Puzzles and Fiction goes through some changes, including a period split into ‘Science and Fiction’ and ‘Puzzles’, but eventually the old name returns. Grace Raye retires to pursue a career as an author, and there is only one natural successor as head of the department: Joseph.

He doesn’t waste time in making changes, dragging the Gazette firmly into the 21st Century. The Gazette starts a puzzles app and monetises some of its puzzles behind an online paywall. Soon the Gazette’s daily challenges go viral, popular across the world. Joseph shepherds Puzzles and Fiction into a golden era of public admiration and financial success.

An old man sits behind a desk, focused intently on his laptop as crosswords and sudokus flash across the screen. He clicks onto a different tab and does a final proofread of a short story, finishing with a small satisfied nod to himself. Another excellent spread ready for publication. He’s an experienced hand at this now. And a large part of him (far larger than he would care to admit) really enjoys it.

He closes the computer and leans back in his chair, starting to daydream. Being Puzzles and Fiction Editor is nice, yes, but he knows where he really belongs: in the Editor’s chair.
