Welcome

Scoop! is one of the two ORPGSoc Society Games for Trinity Term 2025.

Player characters will take on the roles of journalists at the prestigious New Glabe Gazette in the bustling megacity of New Glabe. The Editor of the Gazette has recently announced a prize for the best journalist at the newspaper, and the competition is fierce.

Beyond the focus on journalism, players are encouraged to explore the variety of relationships that emerge when a group of otherwise strangers are thrown together in the workplace. Although the New Glabe Gazette is a business, it is also a community for many of the people who work there.

Scoop! will run on Tuesday evenings during term time. For more details, see When and Where.

Getting Started

If you are new to Society Games, or roleplaying in general, we suggest you first read the Beginner to Society Games page for more information on the format and directions to the wiki pages you might find most useful.

For information on accessibility, including how to change the wiki theme to 'Readable', please see Accessibility.

To get more of an idea of the tone of the game and what themes it's based on, see Style and Tone.

It is essential that you have read and understood the Conduct and Acceptable Themes policy which explains which themes are permitted in the game and how players are expected to behave to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone in the game.

To learn more about the world of Scoop!, see the setting pages in the sidebar, which contain locations that will feature in the game, as well as the GMs and NPCs page for information on the associated NPCs who populate this game.

And finally, if you want to participate in the game, you'll have to create a character. There will be an optional event on Tuesday Week 0 (22nd April) both in-person at Christ Church College or online on Discord if you need help or inspiration creating your character.

Balloting

To be able to run a high quality game and maintain a healthy work-life balance, if more than 32 players submit characters we will be forced to ballot. The ballot will be done in collaboration with Fated, the other Society Game this term, so not having a place in one game will make you more likely to have a place in the other. In the event of balloting, we will admit groups in the following order until we reach a group which will take us over the player cap, at which point that group will be balloted for places. Subsequent groups will not be balloted. The order of priority for player groups will be:

  1. Special Cases (mostly reserved for those who have booked the rooms we need, and to catch extraordinary circumstances)
  2. From people who have chosen to ballot preferentially in Scoop!:
    1. Oxford University students for whom this is their last possible Society Game
    2. Oxford University students who have not played a Society Game before
    3. Oxford University students who have played a Society Game before
    4. Non-Oxford University Students
  3. From people who have chosen to ballot preferentially in Fated:
    1. Oxford University students for whom this is their last possible Society Game
    2. Oxford University students who have not played a Society Game before
    3. Oxford University students who have played a Society Game before
    4. Non-Oxford University Students

If someone ballots with no preference between games, they will be entered into the ballot with the people who balloted for each game preferentially. However, if they get into both games and some people are unable to get into either, they will be asked to withdraw from one.

Everyone who wants to play in Scoop! must submit this ballot form by 12 noon on Thursday of 0th week (24th April). This is so that everyone knows which game they have got into before having to submit a character. You can find more information about character submissions in Character Creation.

Characters are not due until 12 noon on Friday of 0th week (25th April), and can be submitted through this form.
