In the Features Department, we practice journalism as an art. //-Aya Stillwater, Features Department Editor//\\ {{ :herbin-straight-glassdippen-rougecaroubier-1_1500x.jpg.webp?250|}} While other departments operate at a break-neck pace to keep up with current events, the Features Department focuses on long-form pieces that take weeks or even months of research to craft. Features writers can cover virtually any topic, so long as they have the Department Editor's approval to do so. Research for Features may involve international travel, interviews with celebrities, or even undercover investigations. A good Features journalist can expect to win journalistic prizes and secure lucrative book deals. A less-talented (or less-fortunate) Features writer can expect a career of frustration with little opportunity for advancement. \\ \\ The Department Editor, Aya Stillwater, was hired directly into the position after receiving her Masters from Seldona Royal University, the nation's top-ranked journalism school. Though she's only been in the position for three years, she's earned the respect of the other Editors and imbued fear into her writers. Those who survive their first weeks in Features quickly find signs of Miss Stillwater's editorial style: manuscripts in rubbish bins, soggy with red ink, the intermittent whirring of a paper shredder, whispered stories of the poor, naïve intern who dared to call her by her first name. \\ \\ Those who survive their first year in Features, however, will grow to tell you that despite her unyielding strictness, Miss Stillwater gets results. Those who earn her respect go on to publish incisive, critically acclaimed articles with genuine staying power. There exists much debate around Miss Stillwater's personality and editorial preferences. Nevertheless, anyone who has met her can confirm her deep commitment to long-form journalism and her love of investigative work---a passion matched only by her devotion to the Oxford comma. The Features Department operates on a different mechanical pace than the others. A good features article will take, on average, 3 Turnsheets to complete. In return for their hard work, however, a journalist receives near-unlimited creative freedom, stipends for travel, and the opportunity to portray (or expose) the lives of some of society's biggest names. ====== Recent Features Articles ====== **"Altona Price is Tired (of You Putting Sugar In Your Coffee)":** A 12,000-word exploration of Altona Price's latest fashion collection, his newfound love for black coffee, and his growing discontent towards sugar in all its forms. The Gazette's most read article last year and an example of a "human interest feature" that focuses on a single person. \\ \\ **"White Peach Kombucha and Stair Climbing Clubs: Visiting New Glabe's Trendiest Suburb"**: A thorough exploration of South Deighton (a suburb of young professionals with a fast-growing population), with a focus on the need of businesses to keep up with an ever-changing culture of trends. The Mayor of South Deighton credited the article for a 20% increase in tourism that year. An example of a profile feature that focuses on a group or issue through a specific lens. \\ \\ **"Inside the World of Pragmarium Scams"**: A hard-hitting exposé of a ring of psychics that claimed to fully understand the power of the Pragmarium. A month of investigation revealed a dense financial web of data brokers and crystal shops used to provide the psychics with the power to make accurate predictions. The exposé led directly to the shutdown of the ring, which restored faith in the hearts of Pragmarium believers. A good example of an issue feature, which provides insight on a societal problem. ===== Relevant NPCs (at the Gazette) ===== ^ Name ^ Pronouns ^ Description ^ |Aya Stillwater |she/her |Strict, principled Editor of the Features Department.
